How Can I Backup/Restore My Licence/Settings in Case of a Disk/Server Crash ?

License and Settings Backup

After you have purchased and entered the Live license Key to your Merak Mail Server and after you have configured your server in the way you want to use it, you should use the Backup Configuration feature. It is in the File menu.

Config - Menu - File

It will not only backup the configuration but it will also backup your Licence information. It saves these items:

  • Merak\Config folder (complete Merak server configuration and licence information)
  • Merak\Webmail\Config folder (complete Webmail configuration)
  • Merak\Calendar folder (complete GroupWare configuration including all the entries such as Events, Tasks, etc.)
  • Merak\Spam folder (complete Instant AntiSpam settings including the Spam Reference Base)

It does not backup any email messages! To backup your messages you can use Auto-Archive feature is System -> Tools.

The .mcb file you created with this option should be stored on some other media such as a CD, RAID disks, etc. so you can use it after your server crashes.

It is recommended that you use the System Backup feature which is in the System -> Tools to schedule regular automatic backups.

The following example creates incremental backups which are never deleted

Tools - System Backup -

If you are using the Merak Professional version and you have set the ODBC mode instead of using the File System mode, you have to backup the DB manually. It can't be done automatically from Merak.

License and Settings Restore

Assuming you have a backup of your licence/settings in an .mcb file created by the method described above.

Install Merak on your new or fixed server and use the Restore Configuration option in the File menu.

Config - Menu - File

Browse for the .mcb file you have and all the original settings and licences for your server will be restored.

You may, at this point, get a "Reference key Mismatch" if you are using a new server and you will need regenerate your license via the Help -> Licenses -> Retrieve License On-Line menu.
